Volume 1, Lesson 16

Sin, Part II

A Study of Sin

  1. What is sin?
    1. Sin is transgression -- An "overstepping"
    2. Sin is iniquity -- An act wrong in itself whether expressly forbidden or not
    3. Sin is an error -- A departure from the right
    4. Sin is "missing the mark" -- A failure to reach the standard
      • Romans 3:23 - "All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"
    5. Sin is a trespass -- The assertion of self-will
    6. Sin is lawlessness -- Spiritual anarchy
      • 1Timothy 1:9 - "The law [is made]... for the lawless"
      • 2Thessalonians 2:3 - "Man of sin" (literally "Lawless one"). It is interesting to see that the origin of sin in the universe began in the assertion of self-will, and lawlessness. In Isaiah 14:12-14, "I will" is uttered five times by Satan.
    7. Sin is unbelief -- Doubt of the divine truth
      • John 16:9 - "Sin, because they believe not on Me"
      • John 3:36 - "Believeth... everlasting life"; "Believe not... wrath"
  2. Sin entered the world through Adam
  3. All the descendants of Adam are sinners
  4. Humanity has inherited a sinful nature
  5. The Gospel offers a new nature
  6. Christ is the "last Adam," the Head of the new creation
